My name is Jim Hannah and “shoottheadventure.com” is my place for sharing my photography/film stuff. The photography thing has been a part of my life since I was ten years old, shooting black and white film on a simple camera, Russian made, called a Cosmic Symbol. But it had shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings, and I had a separate light meter for getting my exposure settings, so it got me off to a great start in understanding the fundamentals of photography. I progressed through more sophisticated but still initially cheap SLR cameras, like the Zenit – E, with it’s standard Helios 58mm f2 lens, which I genuinely believed was a good sharp lens. Oh the power of advertising on a teenage boy!
When I got into photographic retail, I naturally started to buy and use more sophisticated SLR’s, my favourites of which were my Pentax LX and my Pentax 6×7. Although I resisted at first, of course today I’m a digital photography guy, having been familiar with photoshop since it was called just “Photoshop”, by which I mean the first version, before there was Photoshop 2. Today, although I flirt with automatic settings, manual is still my normal exposure mode, because I know everything will just work because of the way I set it. Or if it doesn’t, it’s because I cocked-up, as opposed to the camera cocking-up!
2019 I tried to do a project 365. It didn’t work; by a third of the way through the year, I was way behind. Lack of commitment? Perhaps. I could have produced a shot each day, of course I should, but I set my target too high, because I wanted every day’s shot to be a portfolio standard shot, and frankly, that was just never gonna happen. So the whole experience kinda disappointed me. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be publishing the shots that I did produce for the project, and which I consider to be “up there”, here on shoottheadventure.com, and discussing the vision/idea behind them. I imagine that those “highlights” will be about 20 of the 135 or so shots I did produce.
Over my years in and around photography, including 20 years or so in photographic retail, I’ve developed a lot of expertise, and a brainful of knowledge and I’m happy to share that knowledge. Just hit me up with the Contact form if you have any questions.
So what about the name, shoottheadventure.com? Well, I do treat life as a bit of an adventure, and I like to take shots, both still and video, as it unfolds. I encourage you, also, to “shoot YOUR adventure”.
